Highview Power, a UK-based long-term energy storage company, has partnered with recycling and renewable energy company Viridor to develop the world's first liquid air energy storage (LAES) demonstration project at 5 MW / 15 MWh. Officially launched in June 2018. The project was funded by the UK government with more than £8 million in funding. The Pilsworth landfill in Bury, near Manchester, England, cooled the air to -196C (-320F) by using surplus power (during off-peak hours). The liquid air is stored "very efficiently" in a low pressure insulated tank. When power is required, liquid air is drawn from the tank. Exposure to ambient temperatures results in rapid re-gasification and volume expansion of 700 times, creating a high-pressure gas in the form of air used to drive the turbine to produce electricity without combustion. The company said the technology comes from established processes in the fields of turbomachinery, power generation and industrial gases. The components used in this process “can be easily sourced from large original equipment manufacturers and have proven operational life and performance. The technology does not rely on special materials (such as chemical battery storage), mainly made of steel, Its life span is between 30 and 40 years, and the chemical battery is 10 years. At the end of its life, the LAES plant can be decommissioned and the steel can be recycled. And because the system uses thermal cycling, it can be in the same position as the heat. Process connections such as LNG regasification, peak shaving and industrial applications. This means that waste heat and cold flow can be utilized to improve the efficiency of the customer's main processes by converting waste heat into useful resources in our systems. Large-scale, truly sustainable, mobile energy storage technology at an affordable cost.
